Northcross Intermediate Curriculum

INTEGRATED CURRICULUM

Northcross offers a fully integrated curriculum.  Four concepts are covered each year with the whole school focusing on set ‘Enduring Understandings’ and ‘Essential Questions’.  This year’s concepts include:
Life Skills, Turangawaewae, Systems and Environment.

Northcross places a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy. Literacy provides the foundation for the integrated concepts and is supported by the learning areas of Science, Social Sciences, Health and Physical Education, the Arts and Technology.
Literacy areas of focus this year include: Guided, Consumer and Reciprocal Reading, speech writing/delivery, procedural, persuasive, recount and instructional writing.
Numeracy strategies and skills are taught independently and where applicable, integrated throughout the concepts. This year Northcross is part of the Numeracy Project and a great deal of resourcing is going into Numeracy. 

Key Competencies

The Key Competencies are also an integral part of our curriculum delivery and emphasised strongly throughout each concept.
Using language, symbols and text, Thinking, Participating and Contributing, Relating to Others and Managing Self, encompass essential skills that encourage the students to become life-long learners.

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL WELL BEING

Building Self Esteem, Keeping Safe, Relating to Others, Eating for Health, Prevention of Injury, Caring for the Body (including Pubertal Change), Helping Agencies.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Small and Large Ball skills, Gymnastics, Dance, Swimming, Athletics.

TECHNOLOGY
Technology is an integrated curriculum involving classroom and specialist teachers.
Over the two years students will cover:

ICT
All students have access to ICT; such as computers, digital cameras, scanners, the internet, an online learning management system and a variety of other technologies. We provide ICT enriched learning environments which include digital classes, computers on wheels (laptops with wireless access), E-pods and ICT Suites. Our ever growing number of interactive whiteboards (Smart & Mimio boards) in classes enables interactive and stimulating teaching and learning opportunities.

Our learning technology and information resources are integrated across the curriculum to assist our students to become engaged and motivated in their learning.

Teaching and learning programmes, supported by ICT, encourage the sharing of ideas, cooperation and team work coupled with developing creative thinking and problem solving skills for the future.
