Scientific Thinking

This year in Northcross’s Maker Class – a specialised program focused on STEAM based projects, Emily Huai had the opportunity to engage in various competitions and undertake a unique learning journey. This program emphasises the transition from two-dimensional concepts to three-dimensional solutions, from animation to toy design, from noodle tower challenges to software-hardware integration race cars challenges. We learn to turn problems into practical and innovative outcomes.

Below is a few words from Emily about just on of her fabulous Science Fair Project:

My project was inspired by an article about the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and natural disasters caused by climate change. While we cannot control the destruction caused by these events, we can mitigate their impact and improve rescue efforts when disasters strike. The first 72 hours following a disaster, often called the “golden time,” are critical for saving lives. This period provides rescuers with the valuable time needed to help injured individuals survive. This understanding motivated me to design and improve rescue equipment to support these efforts.

Through extensive research and investigation, I developed a solution: a multifunctional stretcher that is portable, foldable, and lightweight, designed to adapt to diverse environments such as snow, water, forests, and urban areas.

Congratulations to Emily for being awarded a highly commended award from Samsung for her impressive multi-functional stretcher concept.
